I recently came back from the most incredible adventure. A safari trip in Africa. And I have to share with you how perfect my itinerary was.
It took me 4 years of research and continually seeking deals and offers to find the perfect itinerary. After all, this was my first ever safari experience.
I think that all my hard work and patience paid off in a big way.
ON THIS PAGE:
You can experience the thrill of spotting lions, elephants, and rhinos in renowned national parks in Kenya, South Africa, Bostwana, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, and many more.
The choice of a safari destination will depend on your budget, desired level of comfort and most importantly, your expectations.
From luxurious lodges to budget-friendly glamping options, Africa offers diverse experiences for all travelers and all budgets.
My itinerary was chosen based on budget, lenght and diversity of activities and landscapes.
You will experience South Africa, Zimbabwe (even stepping foot in Zambia) and Botswana to have a trip you will never forget.
This adventure begins with your arrival in Johannesburg, where you will explore the most iconic area with great historic significance. From there, you'll start an unforgettable road trip to get to the iconic Kruger National Park.
On your way, you will have the chance to visit the largest green canyon in the world.
You arrive at Kruger to enjoy thrilling game drives to spot the "Big Five" in their natural habitat for a couple of days. Then you also have a chance to experience game drives in a Private Game Reserve. I choose Sabi Sands Reserve.
Next, a flight to the peninsula where you'll fall in love with Cape Town, its stunning beaches, rugged coastlines, and the breathtaking Table Mountain.
Definitely another bucket list experience.
In the last phase of this epic trip you’ll take another flight to Zimbabwe, where you'll witness the majestic Victoria Falls, a masterpiece of nature that will leave you in awe.
Here you can add helicopter rides, swim at the Devil’s pool or simply walk straight into Zambia.
From here you will go on a road trip to cross into your third African country: Bostwana. Here, you'll experience more Safari and wildlife encounters in different habitats.
Have you ever dreamt of going on a safari in Africa but thought it was out of reach? Think again!
That was me.
For the longest time, I thought Africa was a destination for people who had lots of money. After doing so much research, I quickly learned that as any other destination there are many different ways to make it budget friendly.
An African safari can be more affordable than you think. You can find incredible wildlife experiences without breaking the bank. Imagine seeing the “Big Five” in their natural habitat while enjoying the stunning landscapes of South Africa, Zimbabwe, or even Botswana.
This itinerary will guide you through planning a budget-friendly safari adventure that’s unforgettable.
Kruger National Park is a top destination for encountering the Big Five animals.
This Crater park in Tanzania is an extinct volcano crater that's home to many African wild animals, including rhinos. Tanzania is the region where the yearly wildebeest migration occurs around December.
Masai Mara is one of the top safari destinations in the World with endless plains that are separated from the Serengeti National Park by a man-made border. Kenya experiences the wildebeest migration around July and August.
2 top safari destinations with canoe, boat, and classic safaris. Also offer the chance to experience the Big 5.
I honestly don’t think a safari can ever really be a 'budget' trip in all sense of the word. It’s pricey, when compared to many destinations. Air fare from the U.S., park fees, transportation, safari guides, game drive experts and especially accommodations all add up.
But what if I told that I found a way to make the most affordable African Safari?
Everyone’s idea of 'budget' is different. Generally, the quality of your experience will match what you’re willing to spend.
If you are looking for a luxury experience where each and every activity is private and exclusive for you, then this might not be the itinerary for you.
If you are looking for a more cost effective and affordable option it comes with flexibility. Be willing to share transfers, game drives or general tours with other people. It means that you are all sharing the cost of those experiences.
When it comes to planning, I'd recommend one of these options. First, booking directly with local tour operators instead of going through a travel agent only when it comes to supplemental activities. It'll save you a bit of money. If something goes wrong, it would only affect a singled out experience, not the full trip. The second option is to join a group trip. This my top reccomendation.
After 4 years of researching companies, and even planning a whole trip on my own, I decided the most affordable and easiest way was to do a group trip.
I used the itinerary I previously designed and started comparing it with many tour companies. After much more research I found the one. An option that was within my budget and most importantly it aligned the best to my own planned itinerary.

Neutral, Light Colors: Khaki, beige, and olive help you blend with the environment and avoid attracting bugs.
Breathable Fabrics: Go for moisture-wicking, quick-drying clothes like cotton, linen, and specialized safari fabrics.
Layering: Pack a light jacket or fleece for chilly mornings and evenings.
Avoid Bright Colors: They can disturb wildlife and attract insects like tsetse flies.
Binoculars: A pair of 8x42 binoculars gives you clear views from a distance.
Camera/Smartphone: Bring a camera with extra memory cards or a smartphone with a good zoom lens.
Power Bank: Since access to electricity can be limited, a portable charger is a must.
Eco-Friendly Items: Opt for a refillable water bottle, as disposable plastics are a no-go in most safari camps.
Sunscreen: A high SPF (30 or higher) sunscreen, as well as a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking clothes, will protect you from the sun.
Insect Repellent: DEET-based repellent or one with Picaridin is essential to ward off mosquitoes, especially in the early morning and late evening.
Travel Toiletries: Keep it light with compact, multipurpose toiletries like soap, toothpaste, and shampoo bars.
Packing Cubes: Keep your clothing organized and maximize your limited packing space.
Minimalist Essentials: Prioritize practical items like a multi-use scarf, a hat, camera gear, and a compact first-aid kit.
Smart Packing List: Include only what’s absolutely necessary. This will make your safari easier, especially if traveling between countries.
I’d go for the 7-14 day African safari option as full trip combining game drives with other types of tours. Mixing nature experiences with cities and towns, cultural visits, excursions to coastlines, etc.
2-3 days of just game drives in any national park or private reserve is enough time. Especially if you are planning to visit more than 1 country on the trip. Not every day is going to be packed with excitement. Even 7-12 days can feel like plenty unless you mix it up with other activities.
In any of these countries I'd suggest visiting National Parks and also private reserves.
Private Reserves are less crowded and offer more controlled opportunities to see specific species on your bucket list. Imagine seeing a lion without 20 other jeeps all around yours.
Yes, reserves can be expensive, but even one day in a private reserve can make your trip unforgettable, like it did for me.
The average cost of an African safari ranges from $200 to $500 per day for a mid-range experience. This usually includes accommodation, meals, guided tours, and park fees.
For budget safaris, expect around $150 per day.
Luxury safaris can cost over $1,000 per day.
Careful planning and comparing packages can help you find the best African safari within your budget.
For My itinerary including airfare, transfers, accomodations, 90% of activities, majority of meals I paid less than $3,000. If you want to learn how CONTACT ME HERE.
Dry Season (May to October): Best for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources.
Wet Season (November to April): Lush landscapes and newborn animals, but rain can disrupt travel.
Shoulder Seasons (April and November): Ideal for fewer crowds and decent weather.
An African safari is a bucket list experience that offers adventure, beauty, and wildlife encounters like no other. With careful planning and the right tips, this adventure can be more affordable than you think.
